🧩 Hardback TBR 🧩
Hi, you there! Yes, you! Thank you for visiting my post - this was chosen by poll by my followers and I hope you find something here to add to your own TBR!
My Hardback TBR
1. The Red Daughter - John Burnham Schwartz
This story follows Svetlana Alliluyeva - daughter of Joseph Stalin - as she is smuggled into America.
She has to adapt to her new society after her radically different life in Russia; however, she spends time reverting back to her previous lifestyle - joining a cult-like community, and travelling back to the Soviet Union.
Burnham Schwartz's father was the lawyer who escorted Alliluyeva to the US and he has used the collection of documents and research he has to write this extraordinary novel.
2. Call Me Evie - J. P. Pomare
This is quite a dark, psychological thriller that definitely isn't for the faint-hearted.
17 year-old Kate Bennett, is being held against her will in an isolated beach hut having been put there by a mysterious man named Bill.
He tells her she did something terrible one night in Melbourne but she has no memory of that night and Bill claims to be hiding her to protect her. She has some fragmented memories of her life but nothing adds up.
3. The Jane Austen Society - Natalie Jenner
In the village of Chawton - the final home of Jane Austen - a small group of like minded people get together to form the Jane Austen Society and preserve her legacy.
It is just after WW2 and these individuals is dealing with their trauma and loss by rallying together and despite being so different (a labourer, a young widow, the local doctor and a movie star plus more) they are united in their love for Austen's novels.
*This was a birthday present from my partner last month and I'm so excited to get round to reading it soon. *
4. A More Terrible and Beautiful History - Jeanne Theoharis
Theoharis busts the myths about the civil rights movement and gives us the 'history we need' as opposed to the 'history we get'.
She takes key individuals and events from the civil rights movement and gives the whole truth, as well as the immense barriers the activists faced.
This book also shows us how much work is still to be done and how there was nothing inevitable about what has been achieved - it was a hard path.
5. Splash - Stephen Glover
Sam Blunt is a failed, drunken tabloid reporter; the newspaper he works for is living in the past, struggling to succeed in the digital age.
Sam and Benedict - the intern - work together to uncover a ground breaking story of political corruption and the extent to which the media is a rotten establishment.
The whole novel is a satire of the press and politics, the competitive nature of journalists and media do-gooders.
